Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has made headlines again, this time for her foray into the world of pickleball. While recovering from a back injury sustained at the China Open, Osaka decided to explore this popular sport during her time in Tokyo, bringing a mix of excitement and a touch of embarrassment along the way.
While many tennis players have successfully transitioned to pickleball, including Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard and former ATP World No. 8 Jack Sock, Osaka’s initial attempt was more humorous than triumphant.
After an 18-month hiatus to welcome her first child, Osaka returned to tennis in January 2024, showcasing her incredible talent despite mixed results this season. Notably, she pushed reigning Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek to three sets, even holding match points, but also faced challenges, including a retirement against Coco Gauff at the China Open.
Osaka has a poor start at pickleball
In a playful moment captured on social media, Osaka’s first shot at the game landed straight in the net, leaving her slightly embarrassed. However, the tennis superstar quickly found her footing. After a few practice hits, she showcased her skills with an impressive behind-the-back overhead shot, earning applause from those watching.

With her 2024 season officially over and her withdrawal from the Billie Jean King Cup finals next month, Osaka opted for some lighthearted fun at the Play Academy in Tokyo by picking up a pickleball paddle. Her initial attempt was a bit rocky, as her first shot landed straight in the net, leading to a chuckle-worthy moment. However, true to her competitive spirit, she quickly adjusted her game, impressively executing an overhead shot behind her back to the applause of onlookers.
As she continued to play, it became evident that her tennis background gave her an edge. Despite the initial misstep, Osaka displayed her remarkable footwork and reaction time, easily rallying with partners and demonstrating a finesse that could easily translate to pickleball success. She was seen hitting gentle ground strokes rather than relying on sheer power, a smart approach in this more strategic game.
In her casual attire—fit-and-flare leggings paired with a white cropped tee and sneakers—Osaka seemed relaxed and happy, a far cry from the extravagant outfits she wore at the US Open. The joy on her face, even when she faced a challenging shot, suggested that she was thoroughly enjoying her time on the court.
Osaka is not the first tennis star to venture into pickleball; players like Eugenie Bouchard and Jack Sock have also made the switch. With her evident talent and playful spirit, it’s clear that Osaka might just be the latest athlete to catch the pickleball bug.
As she prepares for a break before the 2025 season—likely starting at the ASB Classic in January—this new challenge may serve as a refreshing way for her to stay active and enjoy the sport she loves. Who knows? We may see her back on the pickleball court again soon, proving that even champions can enjoy a little fun on the side.
