I highly recommend the CRBN 3X to intermediate players alongside the Vatic Pro Flash. It offers a sweet spot between power and control, ideal for developing a more aggressive playing style. As a thermoformed carbon paddle with exceptional forgiveness and control, it makes an excellent choice for individuals of all skill levels.

CRBN started the raw carbon trend in the pickleball paddle industry, and in 2024, I tested over 30 raw carbon pickleball paddles. Out of all, 3x power is the best. You should try CRBN 3X, especially if you are undecided on whether to use the power-focused 1X or the control-oriented 2X.

The CRBN 3X Power series pickleball paddle has a solid feel thanks to its carbon fiber face and foam core. Some manufacturers attach their handles to a paddle face separately, which results in a weak joint at the neck of the paddle, which allows the paddle to flex and finally break into pieces.

CRBN 3x is manufactured as a uni design, one solid piece with carbon fiber from the face to the handle. This makes the paddle stronger and more responsive and ensures it lasts longer. Plus, you get a more comfortable grip with this design.

In my opinion, right from the start, I felt the paddle was excellent in my hands. It struck a perfect balance, being heavy enough to generate significant power for impactful shots yet light enough to ensure I stayed ahead during rapid exchanges near the kitchen.

Value for Money

Crbn 3X stands out for its superior control and plush feel, making it a premium choice. It has been engineered to enhance an intermediate player’s game significantly. The paddle’s features and construction are tailored to elevate gameplay, offering an edge in performance and comfort.

However, alternatives like the Vatic Pro Flash and Onix z5 present attractive options for those on a tighter budget. Both alternatives offer commendable performance at approximately 40% less cost than the 3X. These paddles balance affordability and functionality, making them appealing choices for players seeking quality within budget.

This paddle is fantastic. I can not find faults with this paddle – it hits hard, spins a lot, and gives good control for all kinds of play. I use it every week and recommend it to other players like me.

The JOOLA Perseus stood out, offering exceptional control for a thermoformed paddle while retaining enough power for all-court play.

Who suits this paddle

This paddle isn’t suitable for beginners or even some early intermediate players because the spot where you hit the ball best is a bit small, which is tricky for beginners.

But if you’re a big fan of JOOLA, you’ll love it. It feels like the Ben Johns Hyperion CFS without feeling heavy at the top, making it faster during quick exchanges near the net.

Features

JOOLA upgraded this paddle by keeping the good parts from the Hyperion and adding thermoformed engineering. They changed the surface from “carbon friction” to “charged carbon.” Unfortunately, it spins a bit less than some other paddles they make.

The cool part of the paddle, which I like, is that they built it with a “fully encased carbon” design (aka unibody). As we see, most carbon paddles are coming with this technology, making it feel more powerful and less likely to break than the old Hyperion. Here are some of its key features:

The Perseus comes with JOOLA’s Feel-Tec Pure Grip, a comfortable, moisture-wicking grip that provides a good feel for the paddle. The improved grip on the Perseus made me feel a lot more comfortable. It’s gray, not white, so it won’t get dirty. The color of the paddle features a sleek black design with blue accents. The Perseus looks good, with Ben Johns’ unique signature design and cool pops of light blue color.

The Perseus is available in two weights: 16mm and 14mm. The 16mm paddle is slightly heavier and more powerful, while the 14mm paddle is lighter and more maneuverable.

The JOOLA Perseus paddle is designed for aggressive, offensive pickleball players and is endorsed by the world’s #1 ranked player, Ben Johns. Here’s a breakdown of its performance features:

• Control: Despite being a power paddle, the Perseus offers surprisingly good control. This is due to a combination of factors, including a soft feel and a large sweet spot, which helps with accuracy even on off-center hits.
• Maneuverability: I feel this paddle is light and fast in my hands, so you can easily add the grip and customize it according to your requirements. Its lightweight ( 8.0 oz) paddle with a low swing weight makes it easy to handle and maneuver quickly. This is especially beneficial for volleys, drives, and other fast-paced exchanges.
• Spin: The Carbon Friction textured surface on the paddle face helps generate maximum spin, allowing you to place the ball more precisely and improve your overall game control.

Value for money

For JOOLA fans who love their paddles and want a step up from the Hyperion, the Perseus could be a significant investment. It offers a similar feel but with some potential upgrades. However, if you’re looking for maximum spin and are short on budget, I highly recommend Diadem Edge 18k which is my favorite for spin.

The JOOLA Perseus is a top control paddle with enough spin and power for well-rounded gameplay, but its price tag might be a hurdle for some people. Fans of JOOLA and the Hyperion might find it a worthy upgrade, but competitors like CRBN-3X offer similar performance at affordable prices. Notably, the pickleball champion Ben Johns switched to the Perseus in 2023, potentially boosting its appeal for JOOLA loyalists.

When it comes to materials, this paddle feels premium, standing shoulder to shoulder with the top raw carbon paddles I’ve tested in 2023. Playing with it is a pleasure; it offers exceptional comfort, and its weight distribution contributes to its excellent performance on the court.

Performance

The PCKL Pro Series 16 feels like the best all-court paddle in my opinion. Its power, control, and spin are all well-balanced.

Its 16 mm core—typically seen in “control” paddles—made it remarkably strong, in my opinion. I could easily and reliably send putaways and hard drives. In addition, my touch game was very strong; I could execute drop shots with ease, regardless of how difficult they were technically with topspin or not. This paddle’s spin performance is on par with some of the finest available raw carbon fiber paddles.

Its extended design may make it a little slow in the kitchen, but generally, the paddle is quite agile due to its superb weight distribution.

Valve for money 

In my opinion, the PCKL Pro Series 16 offers excellent value for its price point. While there may be other paddles in a similar price range that excel in specific areas like spin, power, or control, the Pro Series 16 delivers solid all-court performance for just $160.

If you’re in the market for an upgraded paddle and want something that provides a well-rounded performance without spending too much, this is definitely my top recommendation for you.

If you’re a 3.0-4.0 player looking for a versatile paddle that excels in both power and finesse, the PCKL Pro Series 16 is definitely worth a try. Its premium build, excellent spin, and well-rounded performance make it a strong contender in the all-court battleground.

The Selkirk LUXX Control Air Invikta is for intermediate-advanced players (3.5 and above) a top-of-the-line pickleball paddle designed for players seeking ultimate control without sacrificing power and spin. While not ideal for beginners 3.0 and below, this paddle is perfect for those focused on touch games over aggression. It’s a great tool to enhance your skills on the court.

The elongated shape and large sweet spot offer a familiar feel for players coming from tennis. This can ease the transition and help them leverage their existing skills.

The first thing you grip with the Selkirk Air paddles isn’t just a handle, it’s a revolution. The innovative “Air Dynamic Throat” isn’t just a fancy term, it’s a wind tunnel for your swing, propelling you to faster shots with effortless ease.

But the LUXX Control isn’t just about speed. Its 20mm core, thicker than most, had me expecting a mushy feel like my old Diadem Warrior. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by its hidden punch. It’s a control paddle with a secret power move, ready to unleash when you need it.

Selkirk isn’t shy about using unique terms like “Florek” carbon fiber. Don’t get lost in the jargon, though. This stuff delivers just like the popular T700 carbon, packing power and spin into every swing.

One small concern: the face’s grip comes from painted-on grit, not an inherent texture. While it performs well initially, long-term durability might be a question mark.
