In their last matchup in Las Vegas, Ben and Collin Johns lost the first two games against JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier but made an impressive comeback to win the match in five games.
The top seeds needed only three games on Sunday, as they won 11-9, 11-3, 11-4.
This victory capped off an impressive campaign for the Johns brothers, who secured the title without losing a single game throughout the tournament.
“I thought we played solid,” B. Johns noted. “[JW and Dylan] are a very good team with great hands, and they get to the kitchen a lot. I felt like we played a lot of slow kitchen line points, so it was just about waiting for counters and playing solid points from there. Collin was getting ahold of a lot of backhand counters, so I thought it was a clean match.”
Despite both teams being among the top contenders in men’s doubles, Sunday was their first matchup of 2024.
“We love playing against that team,” C. Johns said. “They play our sort of by-the-book style, so we hope to play them more this year.”
That outcome is certainly possible, as all four players have already qualified for the year-end CIBC PPA Finals, scheduled for December 4-8 in San Clemente, CA.
Meanwhile, the No. 3 seeds, Matt Wright and Federico Staksrud, clinched the bronze medal by defeating Andrei Daescu and James Ignatowich with scores of 12-10 and 11-1.
