Mixed Doubles Gold Medal Won by Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns
In a dominating 11-0, 11-7, 11-4 victory, top seeds Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns secured the mixed doubles gold medal against No. 7 seeds Catherine Parenteau and Christian Alshon at Life Time Rancho San Clemente.
This decisive win came after a thrilling semifinal match where they narrowly escaped elimination, overcoming a 4-10 deficit and saving five match points against No. 3 seeds Jorja Johnson and JW Johnson. Their impressive performance in the finals was highlighted by a “pickle” (11-0 victory) in the first game.
“I was happy to get out of a real tight one yesterday, and of course, if you’re lucky to be in the final, then you’re going to make the most of it,” Johns shared.
Ben Johns expressed relief and gratitude after winning his 50th mixed doubles title, the most all-time, alongside Anna Leigh Waters. “I’m thrilled to have made the most of this opportunity after a close call yesterday,” Johns said.
At just 25, Johns is humbled to be contributing to the growing sport’s history. “I don’t focus on the accolades, but it’s amazing to be part of a sport that’s growing so fast. Every achievement is a part of PPA history, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it,” he said.
“I don’t think about the accolades too much, but it’s really cool for anybody to be in a sport like this where it’s growing so fast and where every kind of achievement you have is part of PPA history,” he mentioned. “I’m just fortunate that I’m in the sport and enjoying every day of it.”
